THE PUPPY STAGE DOESN’T LAST FOREVER…
BUT THE HABITS YOU BUILD NOW, DO
PUPPY Training Foundations
-
I focus on teaching puppies what is expected from the very beginning, with practical training around:
Crate Training - Create a safe, positive space that supports independence and calm.
Chewing - Guide your puppy towards appropriate outlets and prevent destructive chewing.
Housebreaking - Establish reliable potty routines.
Foundational Commands - Create the building blocks of a well-behaved dog with sit, down, and place to create structure and promote impulse control. But for these commands to truly work, they must be proofed—reinforced in a variety of environments and distractions—so your dog learns to listen not just at home, but anywhere life takes you.
Establishing good habits early with a puppy sets the tone for a lifetime of positive behavior. Puppies are constantly learning, so consistent structure and clear expectations from the start prevent bad habits from taking root. Early puppy training builds confidence, strengthens your bond, and makes everything—from vet visits to walks—easier down the road.

The foundation of any great relationship—human or canine—is trust. When training puppies, that trust is built through consistency, communication, and connection. Here’s how to get started on the right foot:
Set Fair Expectations and Follow Through - Puppies thrive when they know what’s expected of them. Setting age-appropriate, realistic boundaries helps your puppy feel safe and confident in their environment. But the key isn’t just setting the rules—it’s following through. If you allow something one day and correct it the next, your puppy gets mixed signals. When your expectations are fair and your responses are consistent, your puppy learns to trust your guidance and look to you for direction.
Clearly Communicate What You Do and Don’t Agree With - Dogs don't speak our language—but they’re excellent at reading body language, tone, and patterns. That means it’s up to us to clearly communicate what’s okay and what’s not. Reinforce behaviors you like with calm praise, treats, or play, and calmly interrupt or redirect the ones you don’t. The goal isn’t punishment—it’s clarity. When your puppy understands what behaviors are rewarded and which ones are discouraged, they gain confidence and your relationship deepens.
Build Engagement - Training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about connection. Engagement means your puppy is focused on you, interested in what you’re doing, and ready to work with you. Use short, fun puppy training sessions, games, toys, and your own energy to keep your puppy’s attention and build a positive association with paying attention to you. A dog that is engaged is easier to train, more responsive in public, and more in tune with your emotions and cues.

When most people think of “puppy socialization,” they imagine letting their dog meet lots of people and play with other dogs. While exposure can be part of it, true socialization goes much deeper—and has a very different goal.
Proper socialization teaches your puppy that you are the most important and interesting thing in any environment. That way, when they encounter something new or exciting—whether it’s a crowd, a squirrel, or another dog—they naturally look to you for guidance on how to respond. It’s not about flooding them with stimulation; it’s about teaching them how to stay engaged, responsive, and calm no matter what’s going on around them.
Done right, puppy socialization builds:
Focus and responsiveness in new places and around distractions
Calm confidence and resilience, even when the world feels overwhelming
Prevention of common behavior problems like leash pulling, jumping, barking, or tuning out when distracted
It’s not just about raising a “well-socialized” dog—it’s about raising a dog who sees you as the anchor in every new situation. That’s the kind of trust and relationship that sets the tone for a lifetime of success.
